A question concerning recommendation letters used during job searches

A question concerning recommendation letters used during job searches?
I currently operate a freelance business with my spouse, where I am in charge of the operational/financial side of things, in addition to a full time job, where I am seeking a promotion into a higher level of management and/or corporate position. I was curious if it would be considered a conflict of interest for my spouse to write a recommendation letter in my favor. Professional answers from the perspective of corporate/upper management preferred.

How much is a reasonable price to charge for creating a website

How much is a reasonable price to charge for creating a website?
I'm a Visual Communications major at the Art Institute and I just got my first freelance job designing someone's website. I'd like to charge something reasonable, lower than most web designer's prices, but I don't want to get ripped off. What's a good price?

"someone's website" is a rather vague description. It could vary a lot in complexity from something that takes you an afternoon to throw together, to many hours of hard work. Is it just simple HTML, or something more complicated ? Is it a personal or a commercial site ? Make some estimate of how many hours it will take you, look around for what a reasonable hourly charge would be, and take it from there. I did a search on the terms "hourly rate web design" and looking at a few pages, it seems that $30-50/hour would be sort of mid-range. Just starting out, you might want to start in the lower end of the range. This page explores some of the issues involved. http://buildinternet.com/2009/12/a-discussion-on-hourly-rates-in-web-design/ but there are quite a few others out there that address the subject in many ways

What can freelancers do for individual health insurance

What can freelancers do for individual health insurance?
I have my own little freelance job that I do for cash. I'm not married and not a student, so I find myself without any medical or dental coverage. I'm just looking for coverage for gynological care (once per year), maybe a regular check-up (once per year), and prescription coverage if possible. And, if I'm really lucky, I'd like dental to be able to have a cleaning every 6 months. I've tried looking online but I don't know what or where most of the "insurance companies" are and if they are real or even trustworthy. I am not a registered business nor do I make loads of cash, but I do not want to go on welfare of any sort. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks!
Insurance - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It's not insurance, but have you considered a discount health plan or discount dental plan? What you do is become a member, and this entitles you to discounted services. You don't have the same arduous approval process, and it still allows you to get the services you need at a much better price. Given that you aren't looking for a lot of health coverage at this point, it might be a good idea. Your other option is to get just a basic health insurance plan. It should cost much less, but won't necessarily give you prescription drug coverage. However, it does get you insured at a much lower cost, and starts you with a "track record" of being both insured and insurable.
2 :
You really need to find a local Health Insurance Agent/Broker. This way, he/she can explain all the plans and options to you. Make sure the policy covers you for on the job accidents. I do not know what type of freelancing you do, but you want to make sure it covers on the job accidents.
3 :
Ok, it's going to be cheaper to pay for those all out of pocket, than it will to buy health insurance. Dental cleanings are cheaper out of pocket, too, than dental insurance. You need an individual health plan, and an individual dental plan. PLEASE run the numbers before you buy dental - after copays, deductibles, and monthly premiums, they are RARELY cheaper than paying out of pocket. The health insurance is going to run you about $250 a month. That's just what it cost. Dental, maybe $25. But a cleaning and exam costs ME about $70, so . . . cheaper out of pocket. As to where to find them, do NOT buy off the internet. Go to a local, independent agent. Start with the guy that does your car insurance - if he doesn't write health, he'll know someone that does.
4 :
You need an individual health plan, with a higher deductible, but includes co-pay benefits for office visits and prescriptions. That way, your office visits (make sure it covers wellness for your annual exam) will be covered under a co-pay as well as the RX. Your deductible will come into play for any non office/RX benefits. If you are healthy, you do not need to pay a higher premium for a lower deductible. Companies vary by state, so contact 2 independent agents in your area that handle health insurance. They will do the leg work for you in finding the company that is best for you. There is no "one size fits all" in the insurance industry. Everyone has different needs.
5 :
It is not a insurance
6 :
Try Ameriplan, Its 11.95 per month and it covers dental, vision, chiropractic, and prescriptions or you can get the full medical coverage for 49.95 which covers everything i listed plus docs visits and treatments.Check them out . They pay up to 80% http:www.everyonebenefits.com/rdasent
7 :
I know of a program that can help you with Medical, Dental, Vision, Prescription and Chriopractic care. And it's very affordable. Email me for details.
8 :
Well, depending on where you are located, I just saw something that might interest you. There’s a new company offering low cost individual health plans in Texas for young, reasonably healthy people. I saw it online recently and it looks pretty cool. You buy into a plan at a super low cost with fixed benefits that will cover the typical activities of a healthy person, including preventive care like Paps. Then, if something catastrophic happens, you have the option to get additional levels of coverage, even AFTER the event. You’d have to look into it for more details, but that was the gist. Even if you’re not in Texas, my understanding is that they’ll be offering plans in additional states soon. Plus, they’re backed by a traditional insurance company that’s been around for over 70 years, so even though they’re new on the scene, they have a solid reputation behind them. Check it out: http://www.precedent.com - Good luck

I was looking for a part-time job that I could do online, since I have classes during the day. Medical Transcription is the keyboarding (into a typewriter or computer) of reports from dictation recorded by a doctor or health professional pertaining to medical information. History and physicals, admission notes, office visit notes, operations, hospital discharge reports and consultations are just a few of the (work) types of reports that are created by the medical transcriptionist. General transcription is just that -- no special topic, just a recorded voice. There's a ton of information on the website below, including jobs.

How to best file taxes for a full-time employee with part-time gigs

How to best file taxes for a full-time employee with part-time gigs?
I am currently working as a full-time employee and take 2 deductions on a salary of about 65k. I recently took on a few freelance jobs that will give me an additional 7-10k income, which are paid at a flat fee w/o taxes taken out. I'm worried because I hear that freelancers end up owing thousands in April because nothing is taken out initially (compared to a full-time job). What can I expect next tax season?
United States - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You're probably in a 15% bracket if you're married, 25% if you're single. Figure that much on the freelance income, plus 15% for self-employment tax, so 30% or 40% will go to taxes, plus any state taxes you might owe. You should make quarterly estimated payments, or have a LOT extra deducted from your pay at your regular job.
2 :
I would lower my exemptions to 0 or 1 to make up for the other income. It sounds like self employment (if no social security or medicare is withheld) which means that in addition to income tax you will owe 15.3% self employment tax on that 7-10k when you file next year

I will be accepting a part-time job soon-is it better to be paid as an employee or independent contractor

I will be accepting a part-time job soon-is it better to be paid as an employee or independent contractor?
I have recently begun my own business as a freelance designer, but I will soon be accepting a part time job from another company to supplement my income while I try to grow my business. I will not be receiving any benefits, just an hourly wage. Would it be more advantageous to be paid as an independent contractor or an employee? What would the advantages be (taxes, etc...) of one over the other?
Careers & Employment - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
contractor
2 :
employee...at the end of you the year when you file taxes you won't have to pay anything or little at all...as in independent contractor you are responsible for tax payments to the government.
3 :
If you have business expenses, you can take them off on your taxes if your a contractor.
4 :
If all work related expenses are going to be paid fro myour employer and you'll be working at his locatiopn all the time you cna't be an independent distributor, but even if you can it'd be more worth it then to be considered an employee so he has to do most of the accounting work. If you're paying for most of the working costs out of your own pocket, make sure you are considered an independent distributor so you cna write it off on your taxes versus letting the employer get that right. If you're looking for an indipendent distributor oppurtunity check this website out, oits pretty good. https://www.youngliving.org/Gramora Hope this helps.
5 :
as a contractor, the company will not withhold any taxes or social security. you will be responsible to pay it, either quarterly or at the end of the year. if you are disciplined to set aside the tax portion for year-end, then go as a contractor. if not, let the company do the payroll for you and be an employee.
6 :
Hmmm It has been my experience that when you are a contractor, your pay is usually on a net 30 (aka, the accounting department is not in a rush to pay you in a timely manner). If you are an employee you know that your check will follow a regular pattern.
7 :
As a contractor. You may have to pay self-employment taxes, but you will be able to write off a lot of your income due to the expenses incurred by your business. Check with a tax preparer or CPA, because the tax laws are constantly changing.
8 :
A contractor gets all the money, whereas an employee gets whats left after the fed takes out money for insurance & health care. I'd go with contracter: It's a little more paperwork & money management on your end, but at least you know where it's going. If they're offering health care insurance and you WANT health care insurnace, you could choose be an employee.
9 :
Won't make much of a difference, but I think getting a 1099 (contractor) gives you a little more options. In 2004 I was a contractor - that year I saved on taxes - I did something with my car depreciation expense that saved me $250.

How do you get work as a courtroom sketch artist?
I saw one other answer on here and a responder said to contact local news station in order to find work, but that seems like a difficult way to find jobs. I never see this kind of thing on job boards so where do I look? Also, of anyone does this is the pay good enough that you can live off it alone or are they just small freelance jobs? Freelance web designers question

Freelance web designers question?

someone offered me a freelance job. But I have to pay them 15% up front. And if they don't like what I do, they get to keep what I paid them. How does this make sense?? It doesn't to me.. please enlighten me how this should make sense. That is exactly how I feel.
Programming & Design - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
So you work for them, AND you have to pay them? It doesn't make sense. They're probably just scamming you. They could easily say that they don't like the work, even if they do... and then get to keep everything including the money.
2 :
I've heard of this happening and no it doesn't make sense. YOU ARE SETTING YOUR SELF UP TO GET SCREWED!!!!! Do you have a detailed specification of the requirements of the application? I'm going to guess not. So here is what's going to play out. You're going to spend time developing for them (with them holding your money by the way, which they also get bank interest on too) and then after long debates about the petty stuff they don't like they are just going to say "You know what we don't like it". Also during all this time I'm sure you'll have handed over the code to them without even thinking about it. In the end they get to keep your work, your 15% and the interest it gained. Now then. If you do have a detailed specification (and I mean a detailed bulleted list against which they can check the functionality to ensure that you have delivered what was agreed to) you still don't want to give them 15% just like that. The word for the day is ESCROW. Now for some big contracts the client sometimes wants the vendor to put up some money to ensure that they are in good financial standing; but you're freelance, this shouldn't be something that they are asking you to do. Additionally, they should also be putting up the total amount into escrow as well to ensure that they are in fact good for the money as well ;)
3 :
Now how freelancing works. Most important, write up a good contract covering all bases before you even start working as a freelancer. Then sign up at sites like http://GetaFreelancer.com/ and put your profile and info in. Then, bid on jobs. Don't forget the contract. You pay NO ONE. They pay you according to the job listed. Ron

You can try doing a work at home search but be careful on what program you choose. Some programs are scams and request you provide personal information in which not only do they do a credit check but they can use combined info to access your debit account and get in there to withdrawal or request you do a deposit to them before receiving money and you don't get any money on the return. There are plenty of methods on freelancing such as private investigators or say photoshooter donating photos to newspaper companies like in Spider-Man with Peter Parker.

Have you determined what kind of photography you want to do? Portraits, commercial, landscape, wedding, fashion? For portraits you might want to check professional organizations whose members often need head shots for work. For commercial I'd try checking the small business registries for your state and looking for new companies, find their websites, and then send them an email introducing your services. With landscape you could try selling your work on eBay. Weddings are great because a lot of couples look for photographers just starting out because they're usually cheaper. As for fashion, I'd post on craiglists or myspace - they're are tons of people trying to break into the modeling industry who need comp cards and pictures for their portfolios, but can't afford a pro

The best solution is to look at the skills that you have from your career and start your own business because it places you in control. The difficulty is in identifying what are legitimate work at home jobs and what is a fair and reasonable return for your time. In starting to look at this issue it is important to realize that there are many others that have gone down this path and you can take advantage from their experience here :http://www.wahm.com/forum/. The only way you're going to make is to submit your articles to as many people as you can and hope that one of them bothers to pay you for it.

For freelance writing I would check out: http://www.chrisblogging.com It is a great blog about freelance writing. He is also already very successful in the profession.
3 :
You can always freelance, if you can write good. Check out Writer's Market* (you can either buy it or find it at your local library) and submit some stories; they won't really care how old you are, they won't even know how old you are. If you write well, and write something that they want--they will pay you for it. Now, if you want to freelance for a company that is a horse of a different color ... you may need to interview with the company and provide writing samples to prove that you can write well. When I first started, I published some of my stuff in magazines that only paid in copies and not in cash. It is hard to get poetry published. It is also hard to get paid for short stories; however, it is easier to get paid for a short story that you wrote then it is to get paid for a poem that you wrote. The easiest thing to write and get some "good" money out of is non-fiction. Just pick a topic that you like and write about it. Send it off to a magazine, and you might get lucky. It is usually considered bad manners to submit the same story to several publishers; however, if you have many stories you can submit them all at once. *Writer's Market will tell you what a magazine wants, how much it will pay you for it, and how long it will take to get paid. Hope this helps

I am a freelance writer, and I applied for a job from craigs list. I just wanted to make sure it was legit.?
I applied for a writing job on craigslist. Basically they want thirty to fifty websites reviewed a week, and they claim they will pay over $500.00 a week for them. They sent me two dating sites to review, one of which is an adult dating site. The main thing that concerns me is that there is no website, and no phone number to contact these people. There is only a gmail account listed for the sender. Should I be worried?

Uh, yeah, I'd be worried. Very much so. If they won't give you a phone number, they're not legitimate. Really, it's that simple. Also, 10-13$ a review sounds a bit steep considering the dismal pay most Web ****workers make.

the bread and butter of most photographers is the family portrait. You can set up a simple studio in you living room. Al you need are two hot lights, camera(dslr) a tripod, a stool and sometyoeof background. And a paying client. Make up some business cards and hand them out- the phoe will ring so just be patience

how do I get a graphic design job

how do I get a graphic design job?
I live in Kansas City. Not very many design jobs out there, and when you apply for one, you are competing with 300 other applicants. I don't have 5+ years experience, and people have said my portfolio is great. Should I go freelance, move to another area, any suggestions?

The question is do you want a design job? The market is flooded with graphic designers who paid alot of money for college degrees for the new "practical" job. I know graphic designers who have never had an actual job. Your best bet is to freelance at web design. If you can get a specific site (especially porn since they are constantly changing) you could probably remain semi-employed if they like your work.
2 :
You could free lance on your own- or when you apply you can offer to take less pay for six months to show your experience and creativity - that would get your foot in the door- D
3 :
Build your portfolio to perfection. Your portfolio is the most important thing, that and networking. Make a website, not a cheesy one. Place samples of your best projects on it. Send out your resume and your web link to as many places as possible, even if they aren't hiring. In the mean time do Freelance, you still gotta eat right?.. They do look at experience and where you have worked at before, but if you can get them to see your work, then you will get a call, even if you dont have 5+years experience. PORTFOLIO NETWORKING PORTFOLIO. And of course a little bit of bullshitting never hurt anyone. Good luck

Include freelance works in resumes

Include freelance works in resumes?
Would employees acknowledge freelance work experience? I've been doing quite a lot of freelance writing jobs right after I graduate from college and reviews on my online profile are quite impressive. Should I include those on my job resume?

Yes, I think so. But just summarize them and provide links so that prospective employers can get at the details should they wish to

Can I be a TA on the side and still work at my full time job

Can I be a TA on the side and still work at my full time job?
I have received my certificate to be a travel agent, and would like to see if I could do this part time or on the side to make extra money. I have a full time job currently and it is 8:15-4:30 M-F. I'm not sure how it would work such as - Can Travel Agents freelance? Or do they have to be employed and go to an actual place of business to be a Travel Agent? Thanks and I look forward to the responses.

what are some good ideas for freelance work in los angeles

what are some good ideas for freelance work in los angeles?
basically, I want to freelance my way through life right now...at least for the next 6 months. I'm a little burnt out on 40 hours a week at one job...and way too young to be burned out. I also want to do some traveling, so making my own schedule is key. Other than CraigsList, where can I look find freelance or seriously part time positions? Office stuff, personal assistant, virtual assistant...anything (almost)!

Good question. Apple One staffing has placed a lot of people this way. Another idea is to contact a local staffing agency in Hollywood/LA area - they often hire part-time people to sit in various tv show audiences - it's easy money and you just sit, clap, and you're done for the day. Good luck!

Craigs list.... best bet.
3 :
How about buying a camera and stalking celebrities? I hear it can pay pretty well. Seriously, try the paper, you may also find a legit position on say Monster, or related sites

Where can I find freelance writing gigs/jobs

Where can I find freelance writing gigs/jobs?
I've been laid off since August & my unemployment is really not helping too much with my monthly bills/expenses. I'm not a PROFESSIONAL writer, however I do possess good writing skills & would like to create some income by writing articles, however I'm not sure what websites are reputable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You should checkout ifreelance.com. You have to pay a small monthly fee of a few bucks to be able to place bids, but they have a lot of writing projects that you can bid on. I've been using them for a couple weeks for web design projects and have secured a couple deals. I've been out of work since July and I am with you on unemployment not cutting it. Good luck to you

Is it possible to get a good-paying Graphic Design job without a Bachelor's degree

Is it possible to get a good-paying Graphic Design job without a Bachelor's degree?
My husband has yet to finish his Associate's degree in Graphic design and would like to know could he get a job without a degree, though he has a very impressive portfolio, knows all of the programs, and have been doing some freelance graphic design work on the side, creating logos for bands and things like that?

He should put together a bang up portfolio, then try to get on with a company as an intern. If he does good, many companies will hire their interns even if they haven't graduated.
2 :
of course he can, however, it will be harder for him. Most places will try to take advantage of that and usually try to lower the pay. However, if he gets couple of well known clients and include them in his portfolio, that will definitely help him a lot more. Also have him only display the best of his work in the portfolio and from each category of his work, for example, one cd cover/book cover, web design, package design ect... that way, he will make them more interested to see more of his work and possibly give him a chance to grab the position during an interview. hope that helps and good luck.
3 :
I don't know much about graphic design; but I was able to get a good paying job in accounting (a profession that typically requires a degree and certification) before finishing my degree because I had a lot of experience. I still hit the ceiling salary wise, but that changed as soon as I got a degree. Good luck to you both!
4 :
Of course. In the design world, a great portfolio is much more important than a degree. Another thing more important than a degree is being able to work well with others and in a company. Designers have a tendency for being anti-social, so I would assume they base hiring someone on the following factors: 1. How they fit into the company 2. Their portfolio 3. Their degree
