What kind of rates are freelance illustrators charging in the current market?
I'm thinking about pursuing some freelance illustration jobs and would like to know what the average current market rates are for all different levels of illustration work.

Pick up a book called "Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines" it will tell you. Please, don't under-charge, you will be doing yourself and others a disservice. If you charge less than industry standard, your clients will not take you seriously, and they will be fickle and ask for a lot of changes. If you charge appropriately, they will perceive you as a professional and will respect your suggestions and your opinions

Will working freelance for my old job mess up my Unemployment

Will working freelance for my old job mess up my Unemployment?
I was a full-time regular employee with a magazine. I was downsized last week, but they still want me to write articles for them on a freelance basis, meaning I have to fill out a W-9 form. I have applied for Unemployment, and I already know that what I'll be getting from the government will be better and more steady than what my old job would be paying me. Can I do both? Or will working freelance for my old job cut into, or even disqualify me for, my Unemployment benefits? BTW, I'm in NJ. Thanks in advance!

You have to report in every week that you are actively looking for work. If you are working, no matter if you are freelance, you cannot take that full check from unemployment. You may want to call your local unemployment office to figure out the mathematics. If you do decide to stay quiet and sign in to take the check every week, on TOP of the check you are getting from your job, that needs to be adjusted beforehand, hence why you should call your local unemployment office. Otherwise, you will be penalized and won't be available to use your unemployment office for future benefits when you are indeed out of a job, freelance or not.

whoa now. Free lance employment is not employment. But the w-9 form might make it so that you cant recieve unemployment

There is very little, if anything, that I would trust that was online for employment.

Hello Jovana: If the company you work for is a legitimate business, you can be paid with a check or a direct deposit to your bank account. Once you have been hired by a business, online or not, you must provide proof of a valid Social Security card, permit to work in the US and W-4 form that documents your valid US address for tax purposes. As a consultant online, the business will send you a contract and documentation that states how you will be paid. As an employee or freelancer, you provide the information for payment method, account number, etc. Why would it be important to be paid by check? You might need to clarify your question to obtain an adequate answer. If you need to provide proof that you're working, you can obtain that from your bank. You don't have to be paid by check to demonstrate this proof. The bank deposit records from their institution can provide this.

Anybody tried freelance writing? Which company/website is the most reliable paymaster?
I am an established english writer, planning to venture out into online freelancing. I have heard a lot of bad press about websites who advertise for freelance writing jobs and then don't pay the writer after getting the work done. Can anybody share info about a few good reliable companies/websites with whom they have first hand experience of working as a freelance writer?

every situation and writer is different - what works for one person may not work for another - you just have to apply everywhere for projects - there are books with publisher lists that get updated every year

When studies say that the future of work is freelancing or telecommuting, where there will be no need for a physical office space, and that many are joining the freelancing move right now -- Will you leave your job and go freelance too?

No. I prefer to have benefits, paid vacation time, and health care. All those things I have to provide for myself as a freelance. Also, the first people to be released are freelancers, generally because they're much more expensive and expendable than full time employees. If you aren't visible, you're easily forgotten. You need to be present to network, participate in meetings, and find out what's going on. So no, I will not leave my job to go freelance.

Where I working now is in the process of developing a telecommuting policy, I like my job and it benefits but I rather have the option to come in on Monday and Friday or work at home

There is an online video course that does this. It explains what freelancing is, how to get jobs on freelance sites and work for many different companies. It is not just general stuff, but also has specific information on how to get jobs and what to say in your bid to be picked ahead of other freelancers. Ignore the sales hype on the website, it is really a good course, though the sales hype makes it sound cheap, it is not cheap and has lots of good information and a list of sites you can find work through. It is not free but is not expensive, $20 or $30 I think
