The first thing you need is a Rate Card, that lists your services & rates. Eg. Design rate per hour, or per project, rates for logo, brochure, ad, etc design. And of course your contact details. If you're not sure how much to charge, ask around to see what the current "market rates" are. There are recruitment/job websites that sometimes post freelance job opportunities. You can also get freelance work by networking - asking around, telling your friends to tell their friends, meeting people at networking seminars, etc. Another way is to "market" your services online, on online Classified pages, and even better if you have a website that showcases your work. But don't publish your design rates on the web. And you can also get a list of target businesses/companies in industries that you prefer to design for. Search Business Directories or Yellow Pages for these companies' addresses, and better still, get the name of the company's Marketing Director or person-in-charge. It's usually better to target small companies as the bigger ones already have agencies designing for them. It's also good to target other ad & design agencies 'cos they always need freelancers during busy periods. Then you can mail or e-mail your Rate Card and a few samples of your work over. Some people just throw it away, but sometimes... you never know... Note: If you are really serious, then you should also have Terms of Agreement for your services, to protect you in case a client rejects your designs at the last minute or refuses to pay. And other little details, like who holds the Copyright to the designs once it's given to the client, etc.

Take the cue from that tutor of yours! You could try teaching graphic and advertising design to beginners/novices. For example, I'm sure you are good at some graphics software that others may want to learn. Become a tutor! A private one-on-one tutor can charge a higher rate but you are restricted to specific area - smaller market of potential students. If you tutor online, the rate is lower but you can have a worldwide market of potential students. Try Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org). I've gotten a couple jobs from there, but that's after bidding on several projects. Those looking for Freelancers can be as picky as they want because usually they get a ton of responses and what they usually want is the cheapest solution. Otherwise, try doing actual free work for non-profits organizations, small businesses or even family members. The more work you do, the more experience you'll get and that will help you to build up a good reputation. Good luck!

I work freelance, so I only get paid when I am actively working. I also have many clients and those clients have deadlines. Jury Duty pops up and now I'm screwed. Some clients informed me they will have to find others to complete the job, ie bye-bye paycheck. What can I do, help? Diane the Succubus (PFLAG) Actually no... They pretty much said if I am old, mentally retarded, in college, or am a criminal I can get out of duty. I checked, and they said financial hardship is not covered. While you are not supposed to be able to fire someone from jury duty, the companies are allowed to "move on" and they don't owe me a cent. Kinda unfair to us hourly workers if you ask me, especially when my next payment on where I live depends on if I get work or not... doinou You know something, your response greatly saddens me. You show 0 compassion for the jurors that may lose their job, not be able to pay bills, etc. Forget the boring court part, or anything else. And then you want to tell me I should do my duty and be glad? Excuse me if I sound cynical or sarcastic, but you don't think someone giving up their rights to live securely, with $10/day compensation, so they can hear a stranger's plight is a little hypocritical?

Unless you are sequestered you can work evenings... Trials typically end for the day at mid afternoon 2-3, which leaves several evening hours for you to work... Before your selection as a juror you were asked if serving on a jury would cause a hardship, your status as a freelance worker should have been brought up as a financial hardship...

You can even add a small snippet of your earlier work if you wish. Keep in mind that many of the people that post the jobs are looking for a lack of experience because that means a lower price for them, so it can work out in your favor.
