Is it easy to get a job as a freelance photographer

Is it easy to get a job as a freelance photographer?
I own a SMALL photography company , pretty much just starting out, not even a studio yet, but I need some income and I want to know how feasible it is to get a job for a newspaper or magazine, and if you have any tips on how to go about being hired? Does it matter on what brand of camera?

Being a freelance photographer means that you get better images than other photographers. Otherwise, you would not get any money for what you do. Working as a credentialed photographer is different from freelance work, as you'll almost be guranteed a spot in a newspaper. The best thing to do would be stick to what you know. A good way to make money is photograph at weddings

I'm looking for a freelance job as a translator/Interpreter

I'm looking for a freelance job as a translator/Interpreter?
Can you adice about a org, site company or someone that hires freelance translators:English,French and Arabic (inhouse job) and can be trusted. I'm leaving now in north africa

That's a nice basket of languages. Check with Haliburton.. they hire a lot of people with your skills
2 :
I think to a large extent it depends on where you live. I live in a town of about 40 thousand people in Switzerland and I do French to English translations. There isn't a whole lot of demand for it all the time. I can't count on it as my main income. I work for a small local company who gets the translation jobs for me as they come in. The best way to get the job is to go around to all the language schools and submit your resume and tell them what you want to do. Unfortunately, the more lucrative jobs like translating entire texts go to university professors most of the time. Good luck.
3 :
Hai. you can try job auction. They made an auction for jobs and you bid the price. I dont remember the site, but you can search for it. I think mostly, it will involve programming job, translator is not really wanted there. Anyway im doing Free to join Home job. we have a community there that keep supporting and sharing ideas to get money there. you can mail me if u'r interested. By the way, i really really really dont recommend you to join any online job that requires you to pay before you start to work. They should be paying you. Another thing, even though some offer a low price about $10, but you must know that when there is 10 person joining, it will be $100. I have friends that paid $7, and now, she's stuck without knowing what to do. Honestly, the paid job will definitely involve advertising job. You got to advertise that company and made others pay $10 too. Be realistic, no one will easily pays you $10, its not easy to take even 1cent from others pocket! If you want to search for online job, search for a free to join job, then its ok cause you will have nothing to lose. The task for the job is almost the same but is easier to get others to join since its a free program. Hey, everybody likes free stuff right? No one will reject free money. so, think bout it, dont be fooled by company that ask u to pay. They'll give the task and leave you to do it by ur self without any guidance! All the best!
4 :
My thoughts: The courthouse. The airports. The hospitals. The public defenders office. The department of children and families in your state. And of course, you could definitely advertise yourself in the phone book or the Internet.
5 :
If you are in the US. go online to your local state and see when the next exam is. You usually have to pay a fee to do a workshop for the weekend and then the english exam. If you pass that then you go on to the language exam. But if you pass both youĂ‚´d be making anywhere from 40-60 dollars an hour. Good Luck

Move to India, that's where all the IT jobs are going.
2 :
well you can go to the craigs list gigs section. Also elancer and sites like that. However if you are from america, be prepared to compete with indian programmers who will do things extremely cheaply. PHP programmers are pretty common, and there are plenty of indians who will work on something that takes a week for $200
3 :
Try dice.com. Not too much "freelance" stuff there, but there are W2, and contract jobs. Try googling for sites that need bit of remodeling. Better yet, find a forum that has users post jobs.
4 :
Very difficult - as there are millions of web developers out there. A high school kid with web development knowlege can compete you for bid that pays better than babysitting income or working at McDonalds's. Try www.rentacoder.com where you can bid for php jobs. Robert

not sure if there are any that are instant without bidding but have you tried phpbuilder.com

Work on some pieces of art representative of what you want to do. In your case some fashion illustrations. Look online for fashion type jobs or art related jobs and start sending them samples of your work as well as a resume. If you are good you will get some work. Also go to the mall and find some clothing you like. Look on the tags to find out the brands. Then starting sending your samples and resume to those companies as well. Frequently those places hire freelancers. Keep your prices low to start to stimulate business. Raise them later when you are more seasoned.
2 :
Check out the ASID website (American Society of Interior Design)... to bad you don't live in Michigan. I am looking for a designer
3 :
Ck the "apparel news", you can get it on line also. Most of the fashion industry adds are listed there

How much shld I charge for freelance writing job (internet, magazine, newspaper)

How much shld I charge for freelance writing job (internet, magazine, newspaper)?
How much should I charge for freelance writing job (on the internet/newspaper/magazi... I'm trying to start a freelance writing job. But Im not sure how to charge them. Is it based on pages? or the length of the content? What should I expect from my client (information on what to write, recognition etc.)? Any suggestions? Thank you.
Media & Journalism - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Well, legally I can't tell you what you should charge, because it'd be against anti-trust laws. Not even joking, people have gotten into federal trouble years later for that crap. However, freelance jobs are usually charged based on number of words (in increments of 100 words). You should expect from your client whatever you feel comfortable writing with. Tell them to provide you with as much information as they can, and let them know if they aren't satisfied with you extrapolating because they didn't elaborate, they still have to pay you. Figure out how much you're comfortable being paid an hour (and realize you'll probably have to be paid under min wage until you have references/testimonials), and then figure out how many 100 word increments you can do in an hour. Base your prices off that. Recognition is a must. If they want you to ghostwrite, charge them extra and sell them the rights or sign a work-for-hire contract (google work for hire or copyright transfer). GET A CONTRACT. Get everything written out, doesn't have to be legalese, but it has to be in no uncertain terms, on paper, with signatures, and a notary would be helpful.
2 :
Many publications set their own rates for free-lance work, and you as a free-lance writer can take it or leave it. For some publications, that means as little as $10 or $20 for an article. If you're invited to name your own price, charge by the word. Estimate how much time you'll spend researching, developing questions, interviewing, writing, and rewriting when you set your rates. As a new free-lancer, you won't make top dollar, but you can ask for $.20 to $.40 a word, depending on your local market and your expertise on the subject. Take a look at rates paid by major and minor periodicals by checking the publication listings in The Writers Market, available at bookstores and libraries. Budget carefully. There are a lot of people looking for free-lance work and not enough assignments to go around. You may get an assignment in June with a July deadline and an August or September publication date, with payment upon publication.
3 :
When it comes to charging for your freelance work the location you write for will make a big difference. If you write for a magazine or newspaper you normally won't get the chance to name your price as they will have a set rate normally per word. Internet writing is very different and this is where you will get the opportunity to charge your own price. Most people charge per 100 words and it is quite typical to see people charge as little as $5 per 300 word articles. It will also depend on the type of writing you are doing. Articles are generally the lowest paying whilst sales pages and press releases are the highest. You can charge as much as $200 for a press release and up to $2,000 for a sales letter. There is a great website that provides some excellent information on this topic http://www.ghostwritinguncovered.com , you should have a look here as I know there is a great article about how to price your work. Hope this helps

Do graphic designers who have a fulltime job have to pay a business tax if they do a few freelance projects

Do graphic designers who have a fulltime job have to pay a business tax if they do a few freelance projects?
I'm a graphic designer with a fulltime job and on occasion pick up some freelance projects. I have not done any freelance work in 2007 but did a bout 3 projects in 2006. I recently got a letter saying that I owe a business tax. Am I required to pay this eventhough I don't really have a business?

United States - 2 Answers

1 :
But you do have a business. It might not be full time, but since you are doing freelance jobs, that's having a business and you owe tax on the income.
2 :
You need to add a lot more detail if you want an answer that has any meaning. Who told you that you owed a business tax? The IRS, or a city entity? Many cities call the license fee and business tax, so is this what you are asking about? Also, keep in mind, that you owe not only federal, state and possibly local taxes on the money from the freelance projects, but also both the employer and employee side of SS and FICA taxes. Since you will be treated as self employed with respect to the freelance work. (Check for any special rules with regard to the SS and FICA if your total income for all sources is large enough to require special handling.

What do you think of the new freelance job title " Cloud Worker

What do you think of the new freelance job title " Cloud Worker "?
I encountered this term as I was doing my research on the Web and I wonder if freelancers or any people working remotely will find the word 'cloud worker' as something acceptable...or not. This term rises from the idea of people working anytime, anywhere using cloud computing tools that makes him/her literally working on the clouds. Imagine someone asking you " What do you do for a living? " Then, you answer " I'm a cloud worker. " How would you feel? Proud? Embarrassed?

I suggest you to try project payday, simply because you don't need any money up front and you can start making money within minutes. I average around 2,500 dollars every month with it. Check it out at http://www.ecurrencyhomeprogram.com/payday.htm
2 :
You can earn extra money online by participating in GPT sites (Get Paid To). One site that I personally use and love is free to join, unlike most 'money making sites' out there. Basically what you do is fill out free surveys and offers, and they pay you to do this. They pay around $.25-5.00+ depending on whichever one you do. You can do as many as you like and there are hundreds to choose and do from. There are other ways to earn money on the site, such as referring friends, or participating in their rewards program and earning points to get prizes. I personally make around $150-200ish extra a month, that's on the low side and I don't do it everyday...there are stay at home moms though and other people with a lot of time on their hands that does make over $1000 a month. If you'd like to see proof of payment and read more about the site that I use you can visit my website.

Don't depend on a company to take care of you. You are an artist and also an entrepreneur. You should contact papers and tell them you'd like to submit work to them. Get in touch with magazines and write for them. You could make thousands on an article that may take you only hours (or all month) to write. I'm a writer (you can google Christopher Pascale to see that I'm or real) and when my publisher told me they were going to toss my book for poor sales I got off my ass, got on the phone, and booked myself for a full summer tour with 20 events in North Carolina and New York. It took about 100 phone calls, and maybe it will take you about 100 phone calls, too. Good luck.

As a beginner, how much should I charge for a "freelance" job to design business cards & a flyer

As a beginner, how much should I charge for a "freelance" job to design business cards & a flyer?
I have been given the opportunity to design business cards and a flyer for a local tattoo shop. My goal is to get hired on full-time as a shop manager. This is kind of a test by the owner to see what I can do. How much should I charge for a first-time (probably one time only) design job? I want to make this worth my time, but still not overcharge, thereby decreasing my chances of being hired on as a full-time shop manager?

Programming & Design - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
If you want to get hired as a permanent employee, do it well and do it free. If you still want to make some money out of it, a rate of $ 10 per hour of your working on that would be OK.
2 :
Actually the best way to do is do a canvassing by the some printing shop. Just canvass 2 or 3 printing shop according to their standard price. Then make a conclusion out of their price.
3 :
Don't do it free, people associate free with cheap (I still love Stallman, though). You are marketing yourself, you want to imply that you are worth hiring, business people associate worth with money, so you want to be about average here. If you go too high, you look like you're greedy, too low, you look like you're inexperienced. You say you are inexperienced, and that is fine, that doesn't mean, though, that you will do a bad job, you still need to represent yourself as something worth having, so don't go too low. Guy who spoke before is pretty right. Query design shops in your area, get a feel for that price, go a little under it. This says you are worth something, but you are not trying to take advantage. Essentially, a great deal :) Plus, as you pointed out, you are doing work, and it should be worth your time. On the other hand, if the shop owner is a communist, throw out everything I said ^^
4 :
I agree with Jude. Also, never agree to an hourly rate. You have to work way too long to make any money

I've landed a decent little yearly freelance job from my cousin's boss at the beer sellar and the dude who manages my son's little league uses me and he has many connections. Like I said anywhere and everywhere. Don't push, just keep your eyes open and let people know what you can do. Hope this helps!
2 :
If you've been working at an agency for 5 years, then you probably already have a bunch of connections right there, and if not, then you have the right people to recommend you. Most large cities have some sort of organization for creatives and I'd start looking there first. If not, take a look at the small or private business organizations in your area, maybe even chambers of commerce and such. I'd say go ahead and create your own identity, build your own site, and then get rolling. I've been freelancing since graduation and it's been alright, though I've been too busy to actually turn around and properly do all of my identity since I've been handling everyone else's work. Go figure.

It's possible but not probable. The industry is such these days that MANY qualified, degree-holding journalists who've been laid off are now doing freelance work. They can be pretty hard to compete with. Most people hiring freelancers or freelance headhunters want you to have a few years working in-house at a newspaper, Web site, TV station or magazine first.

It's been my experience that most papers are willing to hire freelancers who don't have a related degree or experience. Your best bet is to look for an event your local newspaper wouldn't usually cover (think something small), do a little research on it and think up an angle, and then call the local paper's metro or managing editor and pitch your idea. If they're not into that, find a feature story you'd like to write or a topic you can cover without a tight deadline, do the story on your own and then take the finished product to the editor of the paper and see if they'd be interested in running it. They may sit on it for a while, but something like that will come in handy when another story falls through on short notice or they've got a big section to fill. As far as pay goes, don't expect a lot. Most papers aren't willing to shell out more than $50-75 for a story unless you're particularly good or it's a long, in-depth story

I was laid off from my regular job, but still do some freelance work. Am I eligible for UI? I live in Canada.
I don't make nearly as much with freelance work as I did previously with both my regular job and freelance, and I have certain commitments like a mortgage. I won't be able to maintain those committments for long on freelance alone.

Is there a way to get a freelance writing job under 18yrs old

Is there a way to get a freelance writing job under 18yrs old?
I am 16 years old and I am looking for a job ONLINE that I could write for. Something like www.demandstudios.com (which I would apply at, but it says you must be at least 18 years of age). So does anyone know of a site that I could write for via online and get paid for it, even though I am 16?

There are lots of potential hurdles for minors in work, many of them legislative, parents and guardians need to be careful about that. There is lots of help from the resource in the box below on this topic, they also have help for all people who are hunting for work, or who need to change careers.
2 :
• AlpineAccess.com - Virtual call center provider using home-based customer service agents. They charge $45 for a required background check. • Arise.com - Answer calls, e-mail and chat requests for global companies at home. Some users have reported a $13 background check fee, a $99 assessment test fee and other charges. • ConvergysWorkatHome.com - Be a home agent providing customer care, human resources and billing services • IntelliCare.com - Call center company that provides clinical and non-clinical telephone services to health plans, healthcare providers, and care managers nationwide. Anyone who is not a qualified nurse needs to work at one of their their bricks-and-mortar call centers, not from home. • LiveOps.com - Virtual call center using remote and home-based agents. All applicants are required to undergo a mandatory background check that costs $50. For an optional fee of $175, a more extensive background check allows you to work with specific Fortune 200 companies that have partnered with LiveOps.com. You also have to install a second, dedicated, telephone landline for this work -- only to be used for LiveOps work. • MSVAS.com - This company has developed virtual assistant training programs for U.S. military spouses and U.S. Department of State Foreign Service spouses • TeamDoubleClick.com - Be a virtual assistant • WAHM.com - An online magazine for work-at-home moms • West.com - Be an "at-home-agent," with duties including obtaining, entering and verifying customer information, answering questions, resolving issues, explaining sales features or offering additional products or services • WorkingSolutions.com - Be a home-based customer service agent • WorkplaceLikeHome.com - An active discussion forum where you'll discover lots of job leads One bit of advice before you take the leap into a work-at-home opportunity: Take an inventory of your talent, add a dash of creativity to your thinking and come up with a plan that suits you. • If you sew well, do alterations for others. • If you have a good grasp of a particular subject, tutors are always needed. • Good with a computer? Consider teaching others how to use one. You might also want to do computer work for college and graduate students. Try putting up flyers around your area as well as the local colleges and universities. • Create personal websites for friends and neighbors. Parents might want to purchase one from you as a gift for a child. It can used for photos and 'firsts' as the child is growing. This makes a great gift to the parents of a newborn! • Are you handy with crafts? Costume jewelery making and selling can be aimed at school-aged girls or adults, and all well-priced gift items sell well especially before the holiday season. The list can go on as long as you align your talents with services or products others need. Be imaginative and create a job! If you choose to go the standard work-at-home route, heed warnings from the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau. Also theres a link on my profile on getting paid to write.
3 :
To work as a freelancer what you do is 1. Find a topic that you want to write about. 2. Find magazines that might want to publish your article 3. Write to the editor and pitch your idea (email them) 4. If they say yes, go and write the article. When you start out you might write the article first before pitching the story. You can write for a lot different things, from street press, magazines, newspapers and so on. The media has reduced its full-time staff considerably so there are many more opportunities in this area. Also, you can resell your articles in many different districts (states, countries etc), so the money can be very good. There are places online that act as agents, such as http://www.suite101.com/ but most writers wouldn't such sites or use agents, but others find agents very useful. Sorry, this is a fairly complex issue, you may want to try and find some books on freelance writing and selling your work.

What should I charge my friend / ex co-worker to do a freelance job for them

What should I charge my friend / ex co-worker to do a freelance job for them?
I'm a video editor, so a day rate is usually $150... but it's really a simple task of creating and burning video & mp3 files to DVDs. Should I charge him my day rate anyway? I'm strapped for cash as it is.

You could tell your friend that you can give him a 5% or 10% discount if you feel that is good for your business. Tell him that you will appreciate if he can refer any customers and you would then be able to give him a bigger discount. We live in a capitalist system and this is how you earn your money. Good luck!
