For those of you that have a side business or do freelancing in addition to your day job, is it worth it

For those of you that have a side business or do freelancing in addition to your day job, is it worth it?
My wife and I are in a money crunch and rather than get an extra part time job and work for someone else, I want to start a side business so I can be my own boss and set my own hours. Do you recommend starting a side business? Why or why not? Do you have any tips on starting/running one? Thanks.

It is worth it, but very hard. Especially if you have family and kids. But it can be done with lots of sacrifices. The main problem will be finding enough time to do everything -- running a business, getting clients, marketing the business, doing bookkeeping, managing finances -- while doing your full time job, balancing home and personal life. From the article "Balancing Part-Time Business with Full-Time Job" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol114/balancing.htm here are some tips: 1. Decide whether you want to be open to your boss that you have a business. Depending on your relationship with your boss, sometimes it can be good or bad. On the positive note, you can show your boss that you are more capable than how he sees you - you have other skills, other talents, and you've got an entrepreneurial spirit. Your boss may see you in a different light, and that can pave the way for promotions and better jobs. On the other hand, the boss may think that you are using company time and resources to do your business. 2. Do not compete for clients. One cardinal rule of balancing full time work with part time business is that you must not compete and steal your day job’s clients (unless you want to be booted off). 3. Schedule and plan your time accordingly. The toughest part of starting a business while working is finding enough time to do both jobs well. 4. Keep your commitments realistic. Assess your schedule and ensure that your commitments to deliver services or products are realistic. 5. Seek the support of your family members. Discuss with your family your plans to continue working at your job full-time while starting a business on the side. 6. Use technology to help you run your business. If you are trying to balance work with business, technology should be your best friend. Make full use of available technology. 7. Take care of yourself. The demands of a full-time job and a part-time business can take its toll on you. Your fatigue and stress levels may hit stratospheric proportions at times, and you better be prepared for this. As to what business you can do, there are hundreds of businesses that you can run from home that would require less than 20 hours per week. I suggest you check out Dan Ramsey's book "101 Best Weekend Businesses," which offers 101 proven businesses that you can operate in your spare time without jeopardizing your full-time job. You can find here some samples of businesses you can do part time http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol67/weekend.htm

I work from home as a freelance writer for Demand Studios. They pay an average of $15 per 500 word article and the articles appear on some great sites like Trails, Travels and ModernMom. They pay weekly through PayPal and are very reliable. I've been working in a food industry for 3 years after leaving school (where I was actually the first in my classroon!!) I have just started, waitressing job at Heathrow airport, and I fet straight away that it was enough, I need to do something that I like. I am thinking about journalist freelance into politics or Arabic teacher. What would be the best way for me to do it, how long will it take? Can I do small jobs (helping me living) leading to those jobs? Hope you understood me! Thank you, Julie.

Realistically, while people like to think they can be freelance writers, the fact the matter remains that they don't have the professional expertise needed to do it. Unless you have a university degree in Journalism, forget about it.
2 :
Start by submitting your writing on topics that you find interesting. Ignore the wet towels that discourage you. Only you can decide, so you go girl!
3 :
To earn money as a freelance writer you need to be an expert, an authority on a certain subject that makes intereresting reading. For example if you have been planting flowers for years or vegetables, and know the ins and outs of gardening you could freelance articles about that subject since you are an expert.
4 :
very hard as you would have to devote practially all of your time to it annd you would have to be an expert in that area as well otherwise its just a crazy idea for most people
5 :
If writing is your passion, why not start a blog and write for topics you love? A lot of freelance writers were discovered through the power of their blogs online, as well as sharing their love for the written words on various social networking sites. Build your writing profile from ground up and the rest will be like icing on a cupcake.

Taxes on freelance work

Taxes on freelance work?
I have a full time job, but I have been doing freelance work on the side. I need to know what I need to do about taxes. I just started doing this and haven't even received my first payment yet. I plan on setting back 50% of what I make from freelancing for taxes. I already way over pay on my full time job. I need to know what form to fill out and do I just file it that same time I do my other taxes?

You attach a Schedule C to your tax return and it is all filed together. You can find one to look at here http://www.irs.gov
2 :
increase your withholding at job fed tax on self emp--sch. c ss tax --there is a max. state tax --add to total income
3 :
You need to keep accurate records and report it under "other income". If you have expenses, you can treat it like a business and take those deductions for travel to and from, supplies, etc. If your are already paying in more than is needed, as you say, there should be no problem reporting the additional income. I doubt you need to hold back 50%.
4 :
50% should be enough, and maybe give you a little left over unless you are in a very high bracket or in a state and city with very high state and local income taxes. You'll fill out a schedule C for your side job income and associated expenses, then a schedule SE to calculate self-employment tax. It does NOT get reported as "other income" - that's for things like lottery winnings that are not subject to social security and medicare, not for income from working. The numbers from those schedules will transfer to your 1040 along with your income from your full-time job, to calculate your taxes. And yes, the forms and schedules all get filed together. If you have a state or local income tax, you'll report it there also. How you do that depends on the state.
5 :
You need to fill out a Sch C, Sch SE; and, depending on what type of freelance work you do you may need an 8829. Go to IRS/GOV forms and get a Pub 17 to read all about it. If you set up a room in your house as a home office or work area for freelance work you can use the 8820 to write off a portion of your total house expenses. You can also write off directly or depreciate any specialized equipment you need for your freelance work. Don't forget all business miles you cover in doing freelance, too; in 06 it was forty eight and half cents a mile. Get Pub 17 and read up on it; knowledge is power

I am a freelance makeup artist . I am currently employed with one cosmetic company.?
I love what I'm doing but i am not getting enough bookings. How do I approach other cosmetic companies to get work ? I was working at a department store for this particular cosmetic line. They say my talent and I have been to school so that is how I currently have some freelance jobs. I'm not sure who to contact to apply for other cosmetic lines. Thank You

Try getting business cards and hand them out to friends and family. Even when you go out to eat, when you leave a tip, also leave a card! Post some ad's in the newspaper, maybe even craigslist? Hmm...what else...Try having your local phonebook put in an ad as well.
2 :
If you want to work as a freelance artist for other cosmetic lines for department stores, you need to speak to the account executive.
3 :
first we need to know which country you are in and where first then may be we might have a fair idea what to tell you , i could say advertise in the paper or give business cards out but you might be in a place that it hard to find work for this type of thing, and the advice will be no good to you... let is know where you are then we might have the right advice for you

Post on Craigslist, search the job postings on Craigslist. Use MySpace, Facebook, create a website to show your portfolio.
2 :
The best way to help you is for you to help yourself. Talk to ad agencies and website design firms...post your website on freelance directories, get your name out there. I've never heard of an HTML coder...there really isn't any skill in it and anyone can do it. You need some PHP/CSS/Javascript/Flash experience to get any really good exposure

Is it easy to get a job as a photographer

Is it easy to get a job as a photographer?
I am interested in photography and am thinking about majoring in it for college... I'm interested in wedding & portrait, fashion, freelance, fine art, and still life photography. Is it easy to get a job in one of these categories? Can you support yourself on it?

Depends on the competition in your area. You might be able to go into business for yourself if the demand is high enough
2 :
Is it easy to get a job as a photographer? Sure. Just put a portfolio online and make a pricelist and you're a photographer. Is it easy to get a job as a photographer and make a good living at it? I would say it's pretty difficult. The market is extremely oversaturated at the moment and it's only going to get more that way in the next 10 years. Generally speaking, jobs that are thought of as cool or fun are either worse paying or have stiffer competition, and I would say photography is pretty high up there on the cool and fun scale in most people's eyes.
3 :
Good jobs are as rare as hens teeth. I see portrait photography vacancies for minimum wage. Fifteen years ago I was a freelance assistant. The photographers I worked for warned me that the money was going out of photography then. Now after working as a photographer for ten + years I've seen the amount clients pay drop by 50% and the salaries for full-time commercial photographers drop by a third. Some people do very well out of photography, but they are decreasing year on year. Sorry if I sound negative, but I honestly wouldn't encourage anyone to enter the profession

Because you're interested in web design, check if the curriculum includes website design principles, graphics design and optimization for the web, web content writing, and software like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash. The knowledge of HTML, DHTML, and CSS also helps in your design work. If you decide to take the freelance route, focus on marketing, as it is a main component of success.
