In the state of California anyway, you can earn money from irregular jobs. You must report on your bi-weekly questionairre what you've earned, and they will reduce your amount of unemployment collected for that period accordingly.
2 :
It depends on your state. Where I live you are eligible for a certain amount of unemployment based on the amount of unemployment insurance your previous employer paid on your behalf. When you have a job you can: a) report it to unemployment and your benefits will be reduced a certain amount or b) keep it to yourself knowing you are only freelancing and the money is unsteady. Incidentally, unemployment benefits are reported to the IRS and must be added to yur income (as an adjustment) and taxes paid on it at the end of the year.
3 :
Collecting unemployment when you are working is fraud. If the unemployment agency finds out, you will be required to pay the money back, plus you could even be sent to jail. Better to let the unemployment office know that you are working a freelance job, and take your chances that you will be able to get the unemployment check again when it ends

I want to quit my job and work freelance and research.

I want to quit my job and work freelance and research...?
It's time to start my own business. I have a salaried full-time job at a TV station in marketing, as a sales/research coordinator, where I've worked for 4 years. There's a high turnover rate in our department (many believe it's due to the dept. head, a combo of the boss from the movie "Office Space" and the pointy-haired boss in the Dilbert comics). I have a B.A. in Communications, and I'm a thesis away from an M.A. in Communications, with an English/Literature Minor. I have 15 years of experience in Media, working in every form--print (as a reporter/photographer), media research, presentation & graphic design, radio/disc jockey, writing for the internet, working in television--both marketing and news. I have connections in every media, and have terrific skills in making great relationships with clients. I won awards for my work. My finances are finally getting together, and I have this strong urge to go for it. Where can I market my freelance skills the best? Advice?

Have a look at The Warrior Forum. Writing content for Internet Marketers is very lucrative at the moment. They are looking for articles on a wide variety of subject between 300 to 500 words. Spend time just reading the posts on the forum but be aware that lots of people on there are trying to sell you something (though not all...) Good Luck Karen

Hey, Why do you think you do not have any professional skills. I am sure you have them, just you need the confidence to get them out! As per your name, I understand you are a programmer. So, I would suggest a site where you can find some programming jobs. Have a look at http://www.freelance-projects.info As such, this site itself does not have any direct projects, so you need to find suitable projects and hit the "Place Bid" link to go to the actual site with the project and register on that site and then bid for the work. This site aggregates projects from various sites and hence, is a one stop shop for finding work from various sites! I hope this helps, Best of Luck for your new career option

hey, the best way which i have found is to create yourself a business card and begin sending them out everywhere that you can eg: fruit stores flower shops hair salons nightclubs etc and when giving them your card also ask if you can leave some too. that way you will increase your advertising market to everyone who goes into the facility. tips for things to put on the card: put your design skills through its paces by designing yourself a personal logo and maybe shape the design of the card so it feels weird in the audiences hand so there constantly thinking about it. it may also be a good idea to create a portfolio online at places like: http://www.deviantart.com/ or http://www.behance.net/ As nearly everyone has access to the internet now, it is really easy for them to look at your website and send you an email. good luck with cracking into the world of freelance graphic design! :)

How do I get freelance writing jobs with Advertising &/or PR agencie

How do I get freelance writing jobs with Advertising &/or PR agencies?
I would like to do some freelance business writing for local companies or ad/pr agencies but don't know how to begin marketing my services. I'd also like to break into freelance magazine or newspaper writing. Any help in how to break into these markets would be appreciated.

you need to get some connections just start talking to some of the people in the business and become their Friend and then use that person to get into the company and work then ask the business owner be assertive
2 :
Advertising isn't an easy business to break into. PR is even harder; it's all about contacts. That said, I work in publishing (marketing manager for a magazine). If someone came in and was enthusiastic about writing advertorials or collateral I'd be psyched (most people want to write pithy stuff) - as long as they had a portfolio proving they could write copy. It's practically impossible to solicit business without a track record. Ask people you know if they want you to write press releases for them or create ads/marketing collateral for free. When you have enough of those examples you can put your profile up on Guru and go to different businesses to sell your services. Good luck!
3 :
Get the Writer's Market... it has hundreds of pages of magazines and publications that utilize freelancers. Put together a portfolio of your best work and make it look nice, Mail it out to businesses and call after a few days to follow-up. (I did this in grad school and was able to live off of the money I made from 3 or 4 clients) Do your research first so you know who is in charge of marketing, etc. Even better if you know someone in the company who can put in a good word for you.

Hi afreen, There are many freelancing job site that are available on the internet. Many people are earning huge money by doing freelancing jobs like, web designing, logo designing, seo and all types of jobs available . You can find them here.

Well I found this new site called http://www.Jobpersy.com I am finding a lot of freelancers, contractors, and those whom are self employed have been talking about this site. It's a 100% Free Job Site for Job Seekers and Employers. It's a new site. But It says if you sign up and create a profile, it will automatically match you with jobs when a Employer posts them or a Job seeker puts up their resume for their requirements. Pretty much both parties are sent emails when there are matches in both criteria. So all you have to do is sign up and setup your criteria, you really don't have to upload a resume, but if you have one, its a plus. And the nicest thing is that this site is 100% Free! I haven't found any other job sites that are Free for Employers and Job Seekers to use

I have a full-time job and work freelance on the side. Do I only pay state and fed on the freelance checks

I have a full-time job and work freelance on the side. Do I only pay state and fed on the freelance checks?
I have a full-time job and do freelance on the side. I will be getting a 1099 at the end of the year from my side work employer. I have been saving 25% of the pay in my savings account for when tax time comes around to pay what's needed. Is this all i need? I ask cause i heard about being considered self-employed and having to pay social security and etc out of your freelance checks. Does this not count since i have a full time job in addition? Or does uncle sam want SS, and medicare from my sidework money too?

1 :
Yes. It is called Self-Employment tax. It is around 15% of your net. If you are already over the social security limit for the year ($102,000 for 2008) your self-employment tax is only around 3%.
2 :
Read about self employed (1099-Misc) tax treatment: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/04/tax-filing-by-self-employed-sole.html
3 :
I assume that your full time job takes out enough tax that without the side job, you wouldn't owe more at the end of the year. If they do, then yes you just make your quarterly estimated payment based on your freelance work. Don't just save the money, send it in quarterly with form 1040ES - if you don't, and owe over $1000 when you file, you can be penalized. 25% might or might not be enough, depending on what tax bracket the two jobs together put you in. And it will most likely not cover both federal AND state - you might want to increase that amount to 30%, or even more if you live in a high tax state or have local income tax also. On your freelance checks you'll owe around 14% for self employment tax which is for social security and medicare, plus federal and state income tax. If your total income from the two jobs is over $100,000 then the self employment tax will be much lower since you won't pay ss on all of it. Medicare taxes have no limit.
4 :
Unless you have extra withholding on your W-2 job, you should be filing quarterly estimated taxes 25% is a good starting point. . . you need 14% for SS and Medicare and then for FIT and SIT, depends on your tax bracket, if you're only in 10% you're fine, but if you're in higher tax bracket, you're not CAN adjust your withholding at work by filing a new W-4 claiming 0 exemptions until the end of the year IRS can assess penalties and interest if you're not paying in 90% of what you actually owe, and since you're not doing the Estimated Quarterly filings, you better make sure you're close
