and they (some freelance websites) want to make a deposit in their system, if they are scams what do I have to do?

Do NOTHING. Stop clicking those websites. There are NO LEGITIMATE work from home jobs where you get paid by an employer. The first answer you got claims you only pay $2.95, but its actually $29.95. Thats a scam right there when they do not tell the full truth. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. It also claims you can get paid $3770 per week. How true do you think that is? Per month or per quarter (every 3 months) is much more likely. The fact is that site mentioned above me is a HUGE scam.

well i have been freelancing on the web for quite some time now, and no not all sites are scams. However if you are new to the business DO NOT go for sites that ask you to pay before hand. Chances of you scoring a project/job is very minimum due to competition. Best freelance sites are auction sites where you have to bid for a project/ job. I am currently using: http://freelanceca.com they have no pay up, infact they are giving out signup bonus as well. You only pay 5% commission once you get the job. Good luck

My friend's mother is looking for another job. Up unto recently she had been a freelance writer but needs a semi-full time job. She's in her late 30 early 40s and hasn't worked outside the home in about 20 years. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Call center work is an easy job for mothers to get and 30-35 hours a week is usually fine for most call centers. The work is not usually fun and you have to put up with a decent amount of BS, but it is a steady job with decent pay and benefits usually.

Personally one of the biggest factors would be financial position. Are you able to accept freelance opportunities as they come & ride out any slow periods financially? Are you good & disciplined at marketing yourself to help keep those slow times to a minimum, or primarily when you choose to schedule some down time. Working at your own pace w no noss other than your clients is exciting & rewarding as a career. Good Luck

More specifically, What type of design work do you specialize in...? I could just as easily say "Post an ad on Craigslist and hope for the best" But the best way to approach getting freelance jobs is to specialize in a particular area. There are certain things in the graphic design world that just cannot be self taught and you will still need that real life real world experience in a physical job setting before setting out to do the freelance work. For instance, I am also a self taught graphic designer and started my first real graphic job designing vehicle wraps for a reputable wrap company. In doing this I learned the necessary requirements of what is needed to actually produce the final product... Things like dimension, resolution, space needed for text to be away from distorting objects on the vehicle etc. These are not things that can easily be self taught. Now I am able to offer freelance vehicle wrap design to sign shops all over the U.S. that have the capability of producing the materials and skills for installation, but fall short in the design aspect and can rely on me to return a product that they know will be usable. Real world experience in graphic design will also help you avoid huge mistakes that can hurt the company that you are designing for... For instance: You are contracted by a company to design a logo, at the moment this is a small time company and are initially using this art for their letterhead. You design an elaborate logo in photoshop that they will be able to use on their letter heads and websites and they are very happy until... They go to get some signs made using that same logo you originally designed but the artworks resolution is only good enough to be used on a letterhead and cannot be used on a sign that will be 4' tall and 20' long, A mistake that will cost that company design time from the sign shop to make that artwork appropriately resizeable, a simple mistake that could've been avoided by using illustrator (A vector based software) to provide the company with a fully resizeable/scaleable artistic logo. You can do general freelance work, but I must admit that the designers doing this are a dime a dozen... It's much better to get real world experience and decide what you want to specialize in, and pursue that avenue rather than attacking general design work. Good luck in your pursuit!

I am thinking about taking some classes as a photography schoo, but it isn't a college. Is that ok? Also, is it hard to find jobs as a freelance? Where do I go for someone to buy them?

Firstly, you need a camera. Then, you need someone to pay you to take pictures.

That's a tough gig. Once you've completed your course. Look for local wedding photographers and try to get in as an assistant. It's just about knowing what you're doing and networking with professionals. Good luck

If you are serious keep your camera with you at all times... I keep mine in my knapsack that I carry everywhere I go. As a freelancer I have done a lot of aerials (they pay great, around $3-500 per shot. Brochures, catalogs, portfolios, intimates, babies and kids.... sold stock for advertising and stock for postcards. That's just some of what I did. It would be nice if you have someone else take care of the $ and you concentrate on the images. A well rounded photographer can make more than a Dr. or Lawyer and have more leisure time doing it. You do have to work, but you get paid well... Believe that you can do it and keep taking photos and work to learn all you can about the business... search on-line tutorials and books, especially "Photographer's Market 2007". Just to start. Don't be discouraged... use the best system (Canon) and stick with it for every lens you purchase. Learn PhotoShop! This is the most important thing secondary to the camera. You need to edit, file, cut CD or DVD...You will need it immediately... .
