How do I better my chances as a freelance graphic designer

How do I better my chances as a freelance graphic designer?
So I have a BFA in advertising/graphic design, but I can't find a job JOB doing that, so I was hoping for some tips for freelancing while I work my part-time, regular job. I have hit craigslist with no luck, and similar sites seem to charge to post, and I don't exactly have money growing out my nose! Lol.....any advice would be appreciated!

How can I get a job as a freelance Photographer at a magazine

How can I get a job as a freelance Photographer at a magazine?
Over the years I have idolized such magazines as NO.ISE, Nylon and other alternative fashion & art magazines. I have been a photographer for close to 7 years, and I know my work is good enough to make it's debut to the public eye. Any help would be appreciate - I must admit, I feel rather stupid sending short emails off to info@magazine.com asking if I can work for them... Seems a bit unprofessional, but I simply don't know how to obtain the jobs I want!

Approach the Magazine. If you have to, look at approaching a combination of smaller and larger Magazine's. Email more than a brief hey how you doing i want to work for you. You have to sell yourself and make sure you send a portfolio with the email of your best works and references if you have any. The more credibility you have the better your chances. So if you've done work for other people ask them if you can include them on your resume. Your work itself wont be enough but who you've worked for will definitely help. If you know you have the stuff then power to you really work at getting yourself out there. Get a website while your at it. If they can find you online then that shows you have form. And most professional photographers have an online portfolio. Good Luck!!
2 :
You say that you have 7 years experience in photography, but might I ask, doing what? Have you picked up any fashion gigs? Photographed anything professionally? Have you had any schooling or other training? Do you have a damn good portfolio? The reason I ask all of these questions is because it seems you don't know how hard the photography business is to break into. It's hard enough to get a job at a local newspaper or a wedding, let alone for a widely distributed magazine company. You might want to take a step back and ask yourself if this is the path for you

What are some legitimate companies that need freelance proofreaders

What are some legitimate companies that need freelance proofreaders?
I really need to work at home because of the rural area in which I live. I would like to do some freelance proofreading or work for a company doing customer service from my home office. Where do I go to apply for such a job? Also, if anyone is interested in hiring me, I would be happy to email you my resume. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Is there any paid freelance type of writing jobs online

Is there any paid freelance type of writing jobs online?
Im sort of looking along the lines of doing it on my blog or something like that. Articles on fashion maybe? Things for women/ lifestyle etc. Paid work, (UK btw) I tried to search for some websites but didn't really come up with much. Thanks!

I don't mean to be critical, but if you want to write, you should know that the title of your post should start with "are." Subject-verb agreement is something to pay attention to. I'm not sure if these sites work with UK writers (I'm in the USA) but you may want to look into them. Factoidz.com allows you to write what you want, publish it to the site and retain your rights after 30 days. Factoidz pays per view, so you could write about Fashion or anything else that interests you and drive traffic to the article via your blog, Facebook, Twitter and social bookmarking sites. To bypass the application and writing sample, use the following link: http://factoidz.com/earn-revenue-now/9M19768 Demandstuidos.com provides writers with topics and typically pays either $7.50 or $15.00 per article. Wisegeek.com also provides writers with topics and pays between $10 and $15 per article. Although I have not written for Suite101.com I have heard good things about the site. You may also want to look into constantcontent.com, associatedcontent.com and triond.com. These sites let you publish articles you want to write about and promote them yourself, like Factoidz. Good Luck!

Hi here is a link to an article for freelance jobs: http://animationguides.com/start-doing-freelance-graphic-design-jobs it is aimed to graphic designers, but you as a writer can also submit to the web agencies mentioned there, there are many works published for writers as well. Good luck :)

You can go to the Digital Point Forum and become an member. Several freelancers use the forum to solicit work and a lot of them are from the UK. You can find more about this at www.freelance.onlinemarketinganswers.com. If you produce quality work, you would be able to get more work than you could handle

With all your experience, how much networking did you do? Usually getting the right jobs is knowing the right people. Perhaps I would ask your previous internships for help finding one, thats if you had solid relationships with management. Otherwise start fresh, and remember to network!
2 :
The networking tip is great. Try linkedin.com it really does help you get in touch with everyone and lots of people are finding this to be a very useful tool.

Well I am a premier makeup artist. And the best advice I have to tell you is that you need to just do alot of different jobs small or large. Just to get your name out there and started. You can put up a site on myspace and tell friends about it. Make little business cards to hand out when you hear people talking about needing makeup done or prom or weddings. It takes time and its not easy to do. But if you are driven enough you will make it! Good luck! Logan^^) logan_art2515@yahoo.com www.myspace.com/eyedos2008

Interesting question I have been thinking the exact same thing as I am about to do a make up course. Hows about going into all the local hairdressers in your area and telling them you do make up, they might get you some business. Also have you thought about bridal? And what about getting a part time job for one of the big make up brands in a department store Mac, Chanel etc. Great way to practise. Good luck xx

Well, honestly I don't know too much about the makeup artist job life style. I went to beauty school, but liked the makeup part of it better. I don't do this for a job, but I do, however, just for fun help girls for weddings, proms, school dances, first dates, special events and stuff like that. i have put makeup on lots of girls for free because I love it. I would suggest you build a portfolio of before and after shots of just friends and family first. Do it for free, just to build a portfolio. It doesn't have to be for a special occasion with family and friends because you are just practicing. You can also explore different styles and methods of putting on makeup and take the pictures for your portfolio. That way you have something to show potential customers your work and the variety of styles. Tell your friends and family that they are your guinea pigs, lol. After doing this and getting a good portfolio built up I then suggest that you maybe take out an add in your local news paper, ask different small beauty shops if you can place a card on their bulleton or flyer in their window perhaps. Go to the surrounding JR highs and highschools and put a flyer on the school's bulleton. Just think of creative ways to advertise that won't cost alot, cost anything at all. Ask friends and family to keep their eyes and ears out for potential clients and to give out your card. When you finally do get a client (and you will) offer a nice discount on your price. Keep doing this for a little while until you build up a client list and reputation of being a great makeup artist. After that you should go ahead and charge full price. This will help you build a great makeup artist business. You have to start from the bottom dear and work your way up to build a good character and by word of mouth it will work. I know this will work because I have done the same steps on two different occasions for two totally different types of jobs. I did this for singing and entertaining. I started out singing at my local bar with a small Karaoke machine for free. All it took was a couple times and just by word of mouth alone someone at one of my shows told another bar owner about me. He gave out my card and I got a call. I only charged this bar owner $100.00. After singing there the same thing happened. Someone there at that show told another place about me and gave out my card, and so on and so on. In less than 6 months I was booked every Thurs, Fri, and Sat a month in advance, and sometimes two months in advance. After I built up that client list of different clubs and bars and customers all loved me I was able to start charging $250.00 a night, plus tips. I also started doing weddings and parties as well. Just be patient hun. I also did this with photography. I built a portfolio of pictures that I took for free of family and friends. I did the same steps that I told you about and Ta Da, I now do photographery as a side job and do pretty well. I know this will work. Be patient, be strong, and don't ever give up on your dream. It will take a little money to make money, but in the end you won't be sorry. Trust me. Yours truly, Liz

Find out at work who has a night out or a wedding and offer to do it for them. If it's your first only charge a reasonable price per person. Also ask them if you can keep a close up pic of your work. Eventually you're name will get out there. Do your friends makeup and take pics as well. It's a very word of mouth business and your reputation is everything. Make sure you have pics of your work with Asian, Caucasian, African makeup which also builds your profile.

Just an idea.... I don't know anything about the makeup artist' career. What if you sold make up for a company like Mary Kay and went to places like bridal shop nail salons and any where else to advertise your skills as well as make money by selling product? IDK.... Good luck though! www.marykay.com/xmccloud
