Is it possible to get a good-paying Graphic Design job without a Bachelor's degree

Is it possible to get a good-paying Graphic Design job without a Bachelor's degree?
My husband has yet to finish his Associate's degree in Graphic design and would like to know could he get a job without a degree, though he has a very impressive portfolio, knows all of the programs, and have been doing some freelance graphic design work on the side, creating logos for bands and things like that?

He should put together a bang up portfolio, then try to get on with a company as an intern. If he does good, many companies will hire their interns even if they haven't graduated.
2 :
of course he can, however, it will be harder for him. Most places will try to take advantage of that and usually try to lower the pay. However, if he gets couple of well known clients and include them in his portfolio, that will definitely help him a lot more. Also have him only display the best of his work in the portfolio and from each category of his work, for example, one cd cover/book cover, web design, package design ect... that way, he will make them more interested to see more of his work and possibly give him a chance to grab the position during an interview. hope that helps and good luck.
3 :
I don't know much about graphic design; but I was able to get a good paying job in accounting (a profession that typically requires a degree and certification) before finishing my degree because I had a lot of experience. I still hit the ceiling salary wise, but that changed as soon as I got a degree. Good luck to you both!
4 :
Of course. In the design world, a great portfolio is much more important than a degree. Another thing more important than a degree is being able to work well with others and in a company. Designers have a tendency for being anti-social, so I would assume they base hiring someone on the following factors: 1. How they fit into the company 2. Their portfolio 3. Their degree

How to become a Freelance 3D Artist

How to become a Freelance 3D Artist?
I am beginning to start freelancing as a Computer Graphics Artist (Animation, 3D Modeling). I wanted to know if there were any reference material such as books, websites, and etc. that has some information on how to get started? I must emphasize I require information that is concise and doesn̢۪t speak in broad generalizations. How to create invoices/contracts? How to advertise and market services? Since many companies I would be working with are long distance what are the methods of payment? Currently I have my portfolio online. Also capable of placing artwork on CD and VHS cassette if needed. In addition to applying for employment at some places, I have registered and/or posted my resume on many job sites. I am looking to get started as soon as possible.

Try "car brokering" You will have to do some leg work, but it is easy and fun,,I have done it in the past to make a few extra bucks and my cousin is doing it full time in san diego and doing real well. All you have to do is print up some business cards and hand them out to the local car dealerships in your area, they should proclaim that you are a automobile broker and have your email and phone number on them,,then always ask if there are any certain cars that the dealer,or the dealers customers are looking for,,then YOU do all the research...they dont have time to do this....you will get a finders fee for every car you bring,,,,,you will have to keep a "look out list" and write down every request and try to make each dealer feel as if they are your best customer.......Its funny,,one dealer could be looking for something and another who is two blocks away could have it.......... have you ever picked up the classifieds and seen something like this.. one ad will say"wanted, two ton chevy" the next will say"for sale, two ton chevy" have you ever wanted to call both people and say"hey guess what"? this is pretty much what car brokering is. You will be absolutely freelance and can make as much,or as little as YOU dictate...... I do have to warn you though,,some dealers can be pretty demanding,so dont make ANY promises if they give you a twenty car list,,just say "I will do my best,,If you say that you'll get it done and dont come up with the twenty cars,,you will not be able to deal with that dealer again.

you can always be a theatrical stagehand. it's union and pays great. They have it in every city and hire almost everone. Look up IATSE in your phone book. There are also internet jobs that do this, but be careful most are scams. like those "paid survey" sites. You ALWAYS have to fulfill their stupid "terms and conditions" and at the end you have a credit card debt and are out more money than what you made. I've gotten scammed by those get rich quick ones too. Don't waste your money. I found one though after looking and I thought it was a scam too, but it was only 15 bucks so I thought i'd give it a try, and believe it or not it was totally real. I make like a hundred dollars a day, which isn't that much, but for 15 dollars it's pretty good

Shelby, I appreciate the suggestion, but I went to that site and the second sentence has a grammatical error. They lost all credibility with me.

Start your own website and market yourself. Don't rely on third party sources that charge a fee. Start a portfolio of clips. If you don't have any published, write articles on random things and use those

Why do most people think that if you graduated from college with a low GPA, you would have a minimum wage job

Why do most people think that if you graduated from college with a low GPA, you would have a minimum wage job?
in the future? I just graduated with a 2.5 GPA and a BS degree in psychology. I am now working as a research assistant at an experimental psychology lab. I got this job because I have connections and three years of volunteer experience. I also do freelance writing and web design in my spare time.

jobs are scarce you said it, you have connections. why did you need to go?
2 :
Wow I think you should really stop with this gpa crap and get a life.......
3 :
i graduated HS with a low GPA, and now i work for a Fortune 500 company. not making the big bucks now, but working my way up.
4 :
Your gpa from college doesn't matter after you get your first job in your field after graduation...no one looks at that stuff. It is based on experience and ability.
5 :
Its because a lot of students are disillusioned about the 'real world'. They fail to realise that life after graduation has no limits - even nerds can become managers and the coolest people can struggle to get a job. Life is unpredictable and full of surprises.
6 :
I never heard that before. However, if your speaking strictly on your major which is Psychology, then most psychology undergrad majors do not work in that field because the field usually requires a graduate degree, for instance a psychologist. Some employers do look at GPA if you are just coming out of school with no real world work experience. Google wants your GPA no matter when you graduated or what experience you have.
7 :
Yes! I understand what you are saying.... My father had a friend that worked in pathology....And, I cannot begin to tell you just how tight liped the dead are !!??

What is the best way for a freelance photographer to get commercial jobs

What is the best way for a freelance photographer to get commercial jobs?
I am a child photographer and looking to get commercial jobs, most agencies will not add me because I don't have enough commercial work behind me. So what is the best way to get my foot in the door? I was told by someone to do test shoots and submit to children magazines. Would it be better to contact creative directors with samples of my work? www.owccphotography.com

try using www.deviantart.com or make a web-site on your own as a portfolio
2 :
Not that I have any experience myself, I figure perhaps you should just diversify your portfolio by adding some commercial fashion, and not necessarily change your style. It seems the only way to get commercial work is to have done commercial work, so try starting small scale before attempting print work with a magazine. It would be good to contact and submit work to as many creative directors as you can get time to see, and keep doing it until they give you a job. The idea will be, if you are a serious photographer simply lacking the experience, is to bother them to death until they throw you a bone. Do a few test shoots, or whatever until you can build enough to be signed with an agency, but don't expect to be right now. There's a reason why most agencies do not sign people without experience that's no different than any other industry right now, so you have to keep in mind things like the economy, and that jobs are scarce for everyone, including those with experience.
3 :
Your work seems like it would fit in well in many parent/child magazines. It would be good for you to get a rep to bring your work to their attention.
4 :
All professional photographers that I work with as creative director in London, UK. started out as photographic assistants. This enabled them to get experience on shoots and also helped them build up their own portfolios.
5 :
Any freelancer needs to market themselves to the various magazines and agencies etc. To do so to magazines then you should be contacting the picture editors/art/creative directors. Do this in writing initially requesting a meeting so you can show your book. Your book (portfolio) should reflect the style of the publication you are approaching, which in practise means potentially having a variety of different styles and layouts. Same with agencies to get on their books as recommended photographers.

It's the 'free lander' chap again. Must have been to English lessons.
