I found one of those websites that list freelance writing jobs (by the project). You have to bid and explain why you'd be the best person for the work. Just to see what would happen, I put in a 'bid' for an assignment to edit a textbook, and listed my writing experience (as did about five other people). I got the assignment which pays a total of $100.00. I happened to have the highest bid too. The job should take about six hours so it's hardly worth the trouble. Are there any sites that offer more 'challenging' assignments, or do they basically work so that the site sponsor (this site, anyway) makes money via a 5% to 6% fee.

Go to http://www.guru.com/ to see if you qualify for any of the posted contract jobs. If so, you can post your qualifications and bid on the work.

if you are afraid to try some of those random sites, consider checking out some magazines on your topic of interest. many mags accept articles from anyone as long as the work matches the mag's style and appeals to the mag's audience. so, if you already subscribe, you'll be better prepared to focus your work to their typical reader. also, their sites should list how much they pay, the type of pieces they are looking for, how to submit (usually email), any deadlines, and possible topics. try that before paying a fee for sources
