Can I do freelance work and collect benefits until I make some money

Can I do freelance work and collect benefits until I make some money?
I lost my job but now the situation has arisen that I might be able to work freelance, but I don't want to do it on a gamble. Can I set up my business and then collect benefits until I make some money and get some clients? An employer has already contacted me about working for them on a freelance basis.

You can collect up to the point that you accept a freelance job and start actually working. Once you start working, you are employed and are no longer eligible.

It depends on how much money you make, but you are not entitled to full benefits if you have other income.
3 :
Ask him to pay you cash under the table. Not recommended, but still an option

Should you put freelance computer repair work on your resume

Should you put freelance computer repair work on your resume?
If I havent had a 'real' job for over a year, but have occasionally done some freelance PC repairs to make money on the side, should I list on my resume that I have been doing freelance work for the past year?

Absolutely, it shows that you have ambition, initiative and drive and the ability to follow through on a job independently. As a recruiter I would put that resume on the top of the pile.
2 :
Yes, you should put this. I would not term it "freelance", though. I would put it down as "consulting". Hiring companies don't like to see gaps in your employment history. But you will have to have a good reason why you did consulting over this time. Good luck

What are some good places to look for freelance editing work

What are some good places to look for freelance editing work?
My day job is that of an editor/page designer. I found out there's quite a market for freelance editors out there and I'm interested in doing this part time. I'm just not sure where to start. Is there anyone out there that can point me in the right direction? Primarily interested in editing books and short stories, but I can do magazine articles and such as well.

Editing, or proofreading? Editing fiction has a very different meaning, often involving rearranging/supplementing/minimizing/deleting major plot elements, changing the method and timing of character development, and so on. Unless you've done it before, the task may be beyond you. (It's certainly beyond me.) But plenty of self-published writers and beginners making their first submissions to legitimate presses and periodicals desperately need the proofreading kind of editing. Advertise, speak at amateur writing groups, leave fliers at the library and on college campuses, get yourself on Craigslist and other local-connection websites, and you may develop sporadic work.
