Do you have a design education? It's pretty competitive FIELD so you need that. If so---try every avenue from your school job office to craigslist. There are many contract positions in design also....for companies such as aquient. Just google headhunters graphic design! IF NOT, go to ART SCHOOL...

If you're good at what you do, word of mouth will give you freelance work.If you have a degree you should have a portfolio. If you're not published/printed start doing stuff for non-profits (boys and girls club, ymca etc) until you have stuff that has been distributed on a large scale. Build a portfolio. Get your work out, the freelance will come.

A major part of going "freelance" in ANY field is in self promotion. That means SALES. The differnce between working in a studio and doing freelance design gigs, is that the studio finds the work for you. A freelancer has to advertise, go door to door, network with print shops and other freelancers. He needs to contact newspapers and other publishers, know WHO to contact at the agencies. A freelancer who expects to make any money needs to be prepared NOT to turn away any work. That means having the chops to do any kind of work offered, and THAT means knowledge, training and power user skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, QuarkXPress, Flash, Dreamweaver (or other web design tools), Acrobat Pro, Word, Excel and any of a half dozen other digital tools. It means GOOD design skills, including knowledge of human psychology and marketing skills. It means having a good feel for typography and some skill with traditional design tools like pencil and pen, painting and illustrating, technical drawing and technical writing. It means knowing the business and knowing how to RUN a business. This knowledge does not come all at once. For some, it comes from years of schooling. For others, it means slogging through years of grunt work and, literally, knocking on a lot of doors. There are no shortcuts. New York is one of the most populous states in the country. That means that there is plenty of work. Just go out an find it.

I'd give craigslist a shot. Otherwise, try posting on the forums at: http://www.dreamstime.com/homesick-tears-rimage3946739-resi443178

Whenever you sell your work as freelance or stock you want to make sure you have the right license as to how your photo will be used. Go to http://www.deviantart.com , they have a section there that explains the different kinds of licenses.
2 :
If yuou took the pictures, you own the copyright the minute you snap the picture. You can register the images with the US Copyright office (www.copyright.gov) as well. Most places take emailed or uploaded submissions, so only send them low res, low DPI images, so they will have no real chance of printing the image with any quality. Call around to different places and see if they are looking for photographers - newspapers, magazines, places that offer newsletters.

Google a book called Photographers' Market 2008 -- it'll show you thousands of ways to make money shooting pictures. By all means send pics to Nat Geo, but unless they're top-echelon images, don't expect to get work. If the country you live in is a signatory to the Berne Convention (most are), your pics are automatically copyrighted and you don't have to do anything. Beware of sites that offer to send your images to the U.S .Copyright Office for a fee. It's unnecessary and they're scams. V
