Yes, in certain cases. First, curators work in different areas. A curating position in a museum is more of a permanent position, a top position, so you won't find too many freelance curators in a bigger museum; it's a position that people work years towards, both in post-graduate degrees and in the field. Art galleries may be a better place to look, as some may have guest curators from time to time and not only accept proposals from artists but curators as well. Gallery owners do occasionally step back and allow you use of the space for a show. Possibly local community centers or civic centers (places that have had art shows in the past) may have a contact there to whom you could submit a proposal. The best way to find out is to go to a local gallery or your local art scene (wherever that is) and ask the people there their opinion. You may also want to consider why you want a freelance curating job. I'm a painter and from my experience, the curators I've known have their own galleries or work in a museum setting; therefore, they get a paycheck from the sale of art work or from the museum. I would think that a freelance curator wouldn't make too much money, as the art market isn't always predictable, and if you have to gain approval for each and every show, you may have to either pay a fee or take a smaller percentage in exchange. Best of luck to you
