How can I get a job as a freelance Photographer at a magazine

How can I get a job as a freelance Photographer at a magazine?
Over the years I have idolized such magazines as NO.ISE, Nylon and other alternative fashion & art magazines. I have been a photographer for close to 7 years, and I know my work is good enough to make it's debut to the public eye. Any help would be appreciate - I must admit, I feel rather stupid sending short emails off to info@magazine.com asking if I can work for them... Seems a bit unprofessional, but I simply don't know how to obtain the jobs I want!

Approach the Magazine. If you have to, look at approaching a combination of smaller and larger Magazine's. Email more than a brief hey how you doing i want to work for you. You have to sell yourself and make sure you send a portfolio with the email of your best works and references if you have any. The more credibility you have the better your chances. So if you've done work for other people ask them if you can include them on your resume. Your work itself wont be enough but who you've worked for will definitely help. If you know you have the stuff then power to you really work at getting yourself out there. Get a website while your at it. If they can find you online then that shows you have form. And most professional photographers have an online portfolio. Good Luck!!

You say that you have 7 years experience in photography, but might I ask, doing what? Have you picked up any fashion gigs? Photographed anything professionally? Have you had any schooling or other training? Do you have a damn good portfolio? The reason I ask all of these questions is because it seems you don't know how hard the photography business is to break into. It's hard enough to get a job at a local newspaper or a wedding, let alone for a widely distributed magazine company. You might want to take a step back and ask yourself if this is the path for you
