I'm thinking about pursuing some freelance illustration jobs and would like to know what the average current market rates are for all different levels of illustration work.

Pick up a book called "Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines" it will tell you. Please, don't under-charge, you will be doing yourself and others a disservice. If you charge less than industry standard, your clients will not take you seriously, and they will be fickle and ask for a lot of changes. If you charge appropriately, they will perceive you as a professional and will respect your suggestions and your opinions
