I was a full-time regular employee with a magazine. I was downsized last week, but they still want me to write articles for them on a freelance basis, meaning I have to fill out a W-9 form. I have applied for Unemployment, and I already know that what I'll be getting from the government will be better and more steady than what my old job would be paying me. Can I do both? Or will working freelance for my old job cut into, or even disqualify me for, my Unemployment benefits? BTW, I'm in NJ. Thanks in advance!

You have to report in every week that you are actively looking for work. If you are working, no matter if you are freelance, you cannot take that full check from unemployment. You may want to call your local unemployment office to figure out the mathematics. If you do decide to stay quiet and sign in to take the check every week, on TOP of the check you are getting from your job, that needs to be adjusted beforehand, hence why you should call your local unemployment office. Otherwise, you will be penalized and won't be available to use your unemployment office for future benefits when you are indeed out of a job, freelance or not.

whoa now. Free lance employment is not employment. But the w-9 form might make it so that you cant recieve unemployment
