How do I find higher paying jobs for freelance writing part-time

How do I find higher paying jobs for freelance writing part-time?
I've been freelance writing for about two months now. Yes I have done some research, and still there's still lots more to do. By testing the waters it seems as though the best start I know is to write for essay sites. Most of the review sites don't pay much money. I like Helium Knowledge, but it's slow. To me that site is where I can develop my skills and evaluate topics that people are interested in hearing. Currently I'm preparing writing samples and thinking about submitting my articles to article distribution sites. Are there any other steps that I could take to build up my portfolio and get paid as well? I've also heard about freelance work exchange, some people applaud the site, others say it's a waste of time. Any one else know about freelance work exchange?

Well I work at an advertising agency and we only have off-site/part time freelance copywriters. They get paid $100/hour and if we give them a website to write they can put in like hours and hours of writing. One woman we use is a mom and she writes for us but makes sure we stay mindful of her "kid" things. But shes great and always sends company emails when she is going to be out of town or a kid thing. So anyway, you should try ad agencies. If you think you can writer product brochures, web sites, print ads etc. try it out. Get paid well and make your own hours. From time to time you may have to call someone and interview them to get the info you need to write, and every once in a while you might be brought to a meeting to understand what you are going to write. But it's goood money! I live on Long Island and we pay $100 so if you did that in the city I bet you'd be paid tons more.

maybe if you went to college and tried to do something with your life you wouldn't have to work on web-sites from your comfy little chair at home, but persue in a career, not just a job. Like me. I'm an international set designer. I worked on the set for Hitch, Fun w/ Dick & Jane, The Breakup, and now I'm doing a movie starring Angelina Jolie which comes out in feb. of 2007. listen and learn.
