What are some good freelance writing jobs?
I'm looking to supplement my income a bit and I was thinking of doing some free lance. Any tips?

It probably depends on your writing experience level. If you have virtually none, do some free writing for anyone who will take it -- local weekly newspaper, whatever. From there you'll be able to move up a bit if you are good. Magazines are an obviously outlet. Pick a subject -- say, travel -- then check the local bookstore to see what is out there. Hint: Start small. National Geographic doesn't hire beginners. From there, hopefully you'll make contacts and get assignments. Good luck.

It's recommendable that you contribute to a few publications for free so you have something to show the people who you want to write for (for payment).

The best place to look for freelance writing jobs is online. There are free services like Craigslist where you are able to find postings, but if you want to take it a little more seriously, you can also look into services like Guru, GetAFreelancer, and Elance. Speaking for myself, I started out with Craigslist, but most of my freelance writing work came from networking and word of mouth. If you would like to try your hand at professionl blogging, it might also be worth a try sending an email to one of your favorite (commercial) blogs.
