What is the best way to get a job in journalism?
I was recently let go from a public relations job in fort lauderdale florida which is ok because I am a writer. The problem and reason for the past job is that I have no idea how to get a job in journalism that is not freelance. My mother was a struggling freelance artist her whole life. I have lots of media contacts, but do not know how to approach them especially now that many are going to know i was laid off. Any advice?

First off, if you want to get a job in the journalism field you need to do the following: Embellish on your resume. I don't just mean tell a white lie here, tell a white lie there... I mean go for broke. Tell them that one of your first published articles was nominated for a Pulitzer prize. Use a catchy pen name. If you have a silly first and last name, use something a bit more on the creative side. Invent a newspaper that you were once employed by (according to your resume)... they'll never know. Make up a ficticious city of residence for your resume's past employers. Pay some of your best friends to be that "golden" reference for you. and finally... Make sure you announce that you have 3 published childrens books and that you are currently working on your fourth. This will certainly seal the deal for you!

WRITE a good resume. Then WRITE a great cover letter. In the meantime WRITE a book while you await responses. If it gets published and on the NY Times Best selleer list, they will be contacting you unsolicited. Good Luck

the usual way is to get an internship with a local paper, radio or news station. perhaps you could volunteer for your local paper to get a portfolio together
